J Coles the Off Season and the Power of the 12/8 Shuffle
In this podcast they talk about the legacy J Cole has left for rappers and in the music industry. “Pushing his technique till the breaking point through verbal dexterity and rhythmic complexity.” They talk about how this album for J Cole was motivation to keep him pushing through to being better and staying in shape.
During this podcast they talk about his continuous stream of rhyming lyrics that blow them away. One of them compares Cole's lyrics to shooting a basketball and getting every shot after shot and never missing. Also pointing out the fact that this album is not about "generating billboard hits” and that is all traced back to the fact that there is not a chorus to the song and just improving and doing something new.
Something about Cole’s new album is being traced back to beats and rhythms that were popular in 90’s, MPC sample shop, and old school rhythms. And with that there is something about Cole that Is projecting an old school persona.
Next, they talk about Cole's song “Interlude.” In this song they talk about how in this song he feels for life as a black person, Jesus Christ dying at 33 and other heavy topics. There is also a rhythm that people do not really hear anymore and that has some history to it, it is known as The Shuffle Groove (12/8 Shuffle) and how it is enormously powerful in its rhythm that makes it impossible to keep out of every genre.
